10 Things You Need for The Perfect Home Office

If you’re in the business of fashion, you know that looking good is more than a fresh mani-pedi. Your style extends to your environment, and your office needs to look as good as you do.

Here at FMM, we’re all about improving and upgrading our environment. We’re using the new year as an excuse to clear out clutter and make room for new clients and new opportunities.

Editor’s note: All fashionable marketers hold tradition in their veigns. Books aren’t meant to be confined to tablets, nooks and Kindles. One must always have printed, beautiful books for inspiration.

Here are our editors’ top picks for cool, functional office schwag that will make your work life better and help save the planet because, you know, why not?

1. A good-for-you chair

HAG Capsico makes an office chair that is good for your body and good for the environment. Made from recycled car bumpers and waste household plastic packaging, the chair’s seat is molded into a shape that promotes circulation in your legs, removing the “sitting is unhealthy” mental anxiety from your workday. Extra bonus, it keeps you from getting tired.

2. Soft walls

Add some flow to your space in 2012. Danish company Grape Design has come up with an innovative room dividing solution for open spaces: the softwall.

Made out off Tyvek, which  is 100% recyclable, these walls are washable with soap and water and slightly transleucent, letting in light. The lack of hard edges is a Feng Shui practitioner’s dream.

3. Green charging

Unfortunately, the grass isn’t real. It looks real though, and it hides a mess of charging cords, which is what really counts. To use, you simply connect an extension cord to the bottom, where you plug in the chargers for all your gadgets so that they can juice up while lounging in the (artificial) grass.

You can grab this fashionable charging station from Think Geek for a song. It will make your office feel a little more like a walk in the park and a little less like a utility closet, which is, of course, awesome.

4. Plug them all in

Why are these not standard everywhere? This is my dream for 2012, USB ports in every outlet. You need the USB ports on your computer for computing, and you don’t want a pile of extension cords under your desk.

This is by far the most elegant charging solution I’ve seen for 2012. Simple, understated and extremely useful. And currently sold out, of course.

5. Ladder magazine rack

There are many ways to recycle, and Real Simple is one of the best places to find clever ways to recycle household items as fresh decorations.

Take the ladder magazine rack. With a cool stain, an old wooden ladder becomes an organic, functional design piece. The limited number of rungs on the ladder helps to discourage the accumulation of clutter: the magazines don’t just pile up on the coffee table. A little shabby chic goes a long way.

6. Smart side table

Another fantastic office design idea from our friends at Real Simple: turn your books from clutter to clever by using them as side tables (see above).

Make a statement with the books you choose, show people that you’re not just clever, you’re well-read too. When clients see that you’ve done your homework, they’re sure to be impressed. It’s a great conversation starter as well.

7. Power for movers and shakers

Working effectively while travelling is critical. Turn your rental car into a functional office with this stylish coffee cup power inverter.

Your cup holder becomes a grounded power supply. No sloppy wires, no muss, no fuss. Road trip anyone?

8. A very good desk

Sure, you need something ergonomic, but you also need something that looks extremely cool. Jules Seltzer desks  are our favorites. You can choose bright or subdued tones to fit your personal style. Either way, you’ve got a museum-worthy piece of art to look at every day and that’s a good reason to rush to the office.

9. Capsule coffee maker

You want a perfect espresso, but you don’t want to leave the office. You’re on deadline and you don’t have time to wait in line at Starbucks while you should be working on a marketing campaign. Why can’t you have it all?

Well, you can with  Lavazza’s EP-850 espresso machine. Just pop a capsule in and let the machine do the work. Then you’ve got delicious coffee and the caffeine boost to fight another day.

If you’ve got the time and the inclination, you can make yourself a cappuccino that will make you wonder if you’re in Venezia. Kicks your Nesspresso machine’s sweet butt.

10. A healthy kick in the butt

Forgive me, Grandma up in heaven, but sometimes modern girls need a different sort of encouragement to cut the mustard in the modern world. If you’re working from home and lack a foul-mouthed supervisor to light a fire under your tush, you can buy one online. Choose the tongue lashing that’s right for you.
