Forecast mobile appCountless mobile apps are launched daily; it’s really hard for a digital girl to keep up sometimes. That’s why I rely on my tech-savvy friends to help me scope out the best new gadgets and applications.

When Sarah Conley (@StyleIT), the first person I followed on Twitter after I set up my account back in 2008, sent me an invitation to Forecast, I knew it was worth checking out.

Back in 2008, before Twitter and Facebook ruled the universe, fashion bloggers relied more heavily on fashion communities like Coutorture (where I met Sarah) to connect.  Times have changed; now we follow each other’s thoughts on microblog sites like Twitter and Tumblr and follow each other’s activities and interests through apps like Foursquare and Instagram.  The way we connect with each other online is constantly evolving, and this new geolocation based mobile app is one more indicator.

Forecast mobile app

The Forecast mobile app offers a fun and simple way for friends to share where they’re going.  You can keep up with your friends or share where you’ll be later today.  Forecast allows you to queue up multiple forecasts and then check-in with one touch when you arrive.  Whether you’re going out for a morning coffee or an evening cocktail, Forecast helps you connect with your real friends out in the real world. It’s social networking that’s actually social.

Going a step further than Foursquare, an app like Forecast could hold value for retailers, as well.  Imagine knowing in advance that a few of your favorite customers will be in your store this afternoon.  While people’s plans can always change, the opportunity for an improved customer experience is there.  In 2011 and beyond, it’s all about connecting and providing a more personalized experience to consumers, so brands that tap into apps like this will have an advantage from a consumer standpoint.

Of course, the trick is to stay informed on the technology and applications that your customers are using.  Forecast may be a valuable app for friends and retailers alike, but until it goes viral, it’s just another cool app.  This is definitely a concept to keep an eye on.

You can download Forecast for free in the iTunes store and follow @Forecast on Twitter.
