On The Rise: Copious Social Shopping
Founded in January 2011, there is already quite a buzz surrounding Copious, which describes itself as “a social marketplace for buying from and selling to people, not strangers.” With its strong social component, PSFK says the startup “has moved away from the anonymity of online marketplaces like eBay and Craigslist.” Bloomberg calls Copious “the eBay for a social world.” Forbes observes that Copious “is an interesting example of what a web company looks like when you focus on social, specifically Facebook, from the beginning.”
In an interview with Fast Company, co-founder Jonathan Ehrlich (who also happens to be the former head of Facebook marketing) says that Copious leverages “authentic identity.” He explains, “It allows the buyer and seller to see each other through the lens of their network.”
Launched in beta last month, users can list items for free on Copious. The company receives 3.5% of the final purchase price from the seller when the item is sold, and there are no other fees.
