P.S.- I {REALLY} Made This… Interview With Erica Domesek
Fashionable women unite for the A/W 2011 season — not on the catwalks of New York, but in the halls of great casinos in Las Vegas. As most of you have heard, Teen Vogue and WWDMAGIC have partnered with us to bring 30 (now 30+) amazing fashion voices to The MAGIC tradeshow in Las Vegas.
We are thrilled to have the talented Erica Domesek of P.S.- I made this… with us at WWDMAGIC this year. We sat down with the DIY style maven to learn more about her journey from fashion industry professional to full-time DIY style blogger.
ERICA DOMESEK is the founder, creator, and author of P.S.- I made this… Domesek is a distinguished DIY design and style expert living and creating in New York City. P.S.- I made this… inspires and encourages everyone to embrace Erica’s creative motto: “I see it. I like it. I make it.“
In Fall of 2010, Erica’s first book was released. Erica has been seen crafting on Martha Stewart, E! News, NBC, and CBS. Her work has been featured in publications such as Teen Vogue, Glamour, Lucky, InStyle, Self, Italian Vogue, Vogue Nippon, and more. She has DIY’ed, styled and designed campaigns for international brands such as Coca-Cola, Ford, Helmut Lang, Bloomingdales, Roxy, Quiksilver, and Sharpie, among others. Domesek’s online DIY collaborations have included WhoWhatWear, Fashionista, Refinery29, DesignSponge, Elle.com and more.
FMM: How did you start your blog? What was the creative inspiration behind putting yourself out to the world?
One day my friend Eleanor emailed me a picture of a designer necklace that cost $600. I told her there was no way I was going to allow her to spend that much money, and urged her to come to my apartment over the weekend so I could show her how to make a version of it. I invited my two other best friends, and we had a lovely “crafternoon.” Soon, everyone wanted to attend my “Craft Club” and make things.
The deciding factor in launching my blog came when someone stopped me backstage at a fashion show, asking me if I had a jewelry line due to the handmade necklace I was wearing.
FMM: From where you began to where you are now as an independent writer, what are three valuable things you’ve learned about your craft?
1. Never dilute your image, content and messaging for popularity, traffic, attention, money, or materials. Stay true to your passion and integrity, and those things will follow.
2. Take a beat, or a moment to reflect. Before I create, write, speak or post, I make myself take a beat and think/ask myself: Would my friends like this? Is this interesting to people, other than myself? Do these directions make sense?
3. Have fun! I’m so lucky to be able to create amazing things, and meet incredible people everyday. However, I work long, hard, vigorous hours, which can be extremely grueling and exhausting. Having a balance of work and play is truly important for a creative person.
FMM: Aside from writing your blog, what do you for a living? How has your blog contributed to your career?
Just over 2 years ago, my blog was the reason my personal and professional lives collided. I have worked in the fashion industry for over 10 years. My role as a creative consultant, prop stylist, designer and marketing guru complemented my die-hard arts & crafts aficionado side, allowing me to craft an amazing career. P.S.- I made this… is a DIY media company that focuses on publishing, branded entertainment videos, dedicated webisode series, live DIY events and more. The blog combines all the PSIMT happenings and links to Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr to always keep fans in the loop.
FMM: What is your personal style?
E is for eclectic! My personal style ranges from modern bohemian street chic to femme polished with an edge. I love colors, ruffles, and many times dress around my accessories.
FMM: What brands are you head over heels in love with?
Elizabeth & James, Chanel, Lanvin, Givenchy, Tory Burch, J. Crew and Proenza Schouler.
FMM: What are three of your favorite websites?
Only three? That’s hard! Stylesight.com, Refinery29.com, and there’s a tie for #3: NotCot.org and DesignBoom.com.
Who are three people you love to follow on Twitter?
@Techcrunch, @MarthaStewart… and my Twitteratti: @Bergdorfs, @dkny, @BagSnob, @AjMukamal, @JohnJannuzzi, @KateMacaluso, @StyleRepublic and @EHolmesWSJ.
What do you hope to gain from attending WWDMAGIC?
I’ve never attended the show, and I couldn’t be more excited! I look forward to seeing all of the new trends and getting a sneak peek at emerging designers as well as meeting all of the innovators and leaders in the fashion industry. P.S.- I hear the cash & carry is pretty cool, too!
