Jazz Ayers: Our 5th WWDMAGIC Correspondent
I must say, the response to Teen Vogue + WWDMAGIC’s partnership in conjunction with our WWDMAGIC blogger correspondent contest has been Amahzing!
In one week, we’ve reached 83% of our blogger participant goal – yes, that’s 23 girls (and 1 guy) coming to Las Vegas to report via video, photos and twitter – not off the runways of New York, but from the floors of the industry’s most establish fashion tradeshow!
One contestant really tickled our funny bone with her “PLEA” to come – and that’s Jazz Ayers. On her Tumblr blog, she wrote:
So for those of you who may not know, Magic is a really big trade show that happens twice a year in Vegas and the amazing people over at fashionablymarketing.me are sending a few lucky bloggers to WWD’s bloggers lounge at Magic. Full access to events-including all Teen Vogue sponsored events. I’m crossing hands, legs, fingers and toes- so here it goes!!! (I know super corny hahaha)
1. How did you start your blog? What was the creative inspiration behind putting yourself out to the world?
I started my blog last summer just because I had done a lot of fashion journalism for the past 2 years and I wanted to be able to express my thoughts on a larger scale-without the guidelines and topic restrictions that come along with writing for magazines. It took me a while to get started because I couldn’t decide what media platform to use-until I found the AMAZING Tumblr
. My creative inspiration came from everything that keeps me going everyday-fashion, dance, and music! I wanted something that was mine where I could put out all my thoughts and opinions without being judged.
2. From where you began to where you are now as an independent writer, what are three valuable things you’ve learned about your craft?
1) Don’t worry about the number of followers, just make sure your blog is what YOU want it to be, not what other people want it to be.
2) If a door looks locked-try the knob you might get lucky! I saw an opportunity to write fashion for a magazine that had everything in it-Music, Entertainment, Celebrity features-everything except fashion! so I called the publisher, did a sample article and next thing I knew-I was running a fashion department!
3) Always re-read EVERYTHING!!! Just because you’re not writing for Vogue just yet, it doesn’t mean that quality isn’t important. You never know who’s going to come across your site.
3. What is your personal style?
Honestly, there’s no one way to explain my personal style, it changes day to day. Sometimes I want to be classic and I’ll throw on pearls, sometimes I want to go vintage and I’ll throw on my grandmas rings, sometimes I want to be country and I put on my cowboy boots and cut off shorts-it’s al based on my mood and time frame when I wake up. But I will say comfort is always at the root of my style
4. What brands are you head over heels in love with?
Jeffery Campbell!!! Beyond Amazing!!!! Foreign exchange, affordable and stylish! Forever 21-great basics for a college student on a budget. Joe Jeans-most comfortable jeans I own! And the day I can afford it there will be a pair of Christian Louboutin’s on my feet. Chic, stylish, and classic!
5. What are three of your favorite websites?
c. My feedly.com homepage that links ALLLLL my fav sites into one place ?
6. Who are three people you love to follow on twitter?
a. Carla Isabel @fashionintern
b. Erika Bearman @oscarsprgirl
c. Joseph Simmons @revrunwisdom
7. What do you hope to gain from attending WWDMAGIC?
So many different industry people attend Magic, from retailers to bloggers to manufacturers to stylists. It’s one of few places where you get an opportunity to meet so many new people in different aspects of the industry. You get to get up on the next season’s trends, spot the changes and repeats, and be a step ahead of the rest. The opportunities to learn are endless, and the connections and the experience alone are enough to make the pain from 5 inch heels worth it!!
Every time I had a chance to go to Magic, something went wrong-parents thought I was to young, it was right in the middle of finals, couldn’t afford it, something. This is one time where I could honestly make it happen and I would appreciate the experience more than you know- sooooooo
This is the passion and playfulness we were hoping to find! I’m tired of the same eight bloggers getting all the gigs and opps that should be opened up to those that will come after them. This project serves as a starting point for that. We’re finding the next round of online influencers. I am amazed at what some of our participants are doing already and what they have in store for you. Wait until you see them on the show floor. I sense fashionable changes coming in the way we approach and work with bloggers…you’ll have to wait and see.
You can follow the magical events and experiences of our bloggers on the WWDMAGIC Tumblr or enter the contest yourself.
