Consumers in the United Kingdom can now access the German-made barcoo barcode app.  Already popular in Germany, this free app will help UK consumers learn valuable information about a product by scanning its barcode.

Encouraging consumers to shop more ethically, barcoo offers users a wealth of information.  Users can access information such as testing and customer reviews, sustainability information, price comparison and ecological footprint information.  The barcoo barcode app will display nutritional information when food items are scanned.  Consumers can find out which stores in the local area carry a certain product.

barcoo currently offers product information on food items, cosmetics, electronics, and media products such as CDs, DVDs and books.  Users can contribute their own information by entering nutritional values, adding comments or uploading product images.

barcoo is available for many mobile phones and smart phones.  Currently, the app is launching for iPhone, Android powered devices, and the Samsung Wave with the bada operating system.  In a few weeks, barcoo will also be offered in the Nokia Ovi store.
