Urban Outfitters To Bring Mobile POS Technology In Stores

Submitted by Stephanie Kwak on 06/24/2010 – 2:16 pmComments

Urban Outfitters Mobile MarketingAustin based Starmount, which specializes in digital signage, interactive kiosks and mobile solutions, has signed a deal with Urban Outfitters to bring mobile point of sale (POS) applications to UO stores.

Urban Outfitters is hoping that the applications Starmount develop will improve customer service and make UO a frontrunner in interactive commerce.

While UO might one day incorporate technology like interactive kiosks (which Starmount also specializes in), right now they are focusing on bringing in mobile sales and mobile technology into their stores.

Urban Outfitters’ Executive Director of Information Technology, John Devine, commented on why UO wants to bring mobile POS to its stores:

“Starmount’s solution will deliver a platform to drive efficiency in-store while enabling us to create the differentiated customer experience Urban Outfitters is known for.”

Using Starmount applications, store associates will be able to able to “ring up” customers in other places besides the register. This will allow customers to buy items in the places where they decided they wanted to make a purchase.  Associates will also be able to have access to the store database, meaning that they can better answer customers’ questions.

A prototype, made on the iPod Touch, debuted at the Oracle Retail CrossTalk on June 22 to 24, 2010.
