Gap Test Geo-Social Marketing, But Not With Foursquare; Rewarding Customers Who Check-in With In-Store Discounts
Lifestyle and luxury brands are getting more gutsy with mobile and geo-social marketing tactics.
According to a recent article on Loopt, Gap has been using Loopt to offer a 25 percent discount for users that check in twice at one of the retailer’s locations.
Since June 1, as part of a new rewards program called Loopt Star, Gap store patrons can present a digital code to get the discount. While Loopt has 3 million users and is available on most handheld devices, the rewards program isn’t cross platform, which would have made it available on Android, Blackberry or Nokia phones. Currently, it is only available on the iPhone.
Sam Altman, CEO of the Mountain View, CA-based Loopt, said that “every Gap in the U.S.” was participating in the campaign. When addressing marketers using Loopt Star, he added, “We will have a self-service platform soon,” meaning brands and retailers can control their specials and promotions themselves.
What Is Loopt Star?
Similar to the concept that Foursquare has introduced, Loopt Star rewards users and their for going out and exploring the world. Users earn achievements and real rewards from their favorite brands, retailers and store. Loopt continues to add new promotions and diversify the incentives it offers users.
Great find Macala. I'm signing up for Loopt to see what benefits are offered to the consumer directly. I've been checking in on Foursquare for four months and have never been contacted by any establishment where I hold a mayorship or offered any discount or benefit. Still waiting! Let's see what Loopt has to offer.
Macala – Great post. With Loopt Star's capabilities to run promotional and reward programs do you think that Foursquare will soon add a feature similar to compete? Just as @Fashionoffice said, I havent been offered any benefits from any brand by my Foursquare, so Im going to sign up and check out Loopt.
It's really up in the air what they geo services are going to offer. Loopt has been around longer and is more established, yet Gowalla and Foursquare gained traction more quickly. I think Loopt is beefing up their game to get their market share back.
