A Truly Unique Experience: Inside The Unique LA Show

Submitted by on 05/03/2010 – 6:17 AM5 Comments

Unique LA Indie Fashion TradeshowTwo weeks ago, Stephanie and I attended Unique LA. Unique LA is an independent design, home and gift show for California-based brands and companies.

Unique LA is the largest independent design show in the country and features over 300 designers and artists. Show participants came from as far as San Francisco and San Diego to be a part of this two-day event. There were also a handful of New Yorkers testing the LA waters.

FMM LOVES Unique LA

Aside from the Caro Marketing Simply Stylist event during LA Fashion Week, this is the second best event I’ve been to in Los Angeles all year. This show offers participants the chance to increase awareness of their product lines, sell directly to customers, engage with media and stylists and also develop relationships with regional buyers and retailers.

One regional buyer (who wished to remain anonymous) told us that, “Unique LA is where I come to find an competitive edge. The quality of the brands and designers just continues to increase. This show has been especially great for accessories.”

Located on the top floor of the California Market Center Penthouse, the show was extremely well laid out and vendors had ample showcase space. Before the door opened, there was a line at least 200 people long. The retailers who were moving the most merchandise had items available to shoppers below a retail price point of $80.00. Food vendors had things priced below $25.00 per set.

Should New York  and California Designers Participate?

Yes, we absolutely recommend this event for independent, emerging New York designers wanting to test the LA Market.

Our feelings were shared by Los Angeles-based independent vintage handbag and accessories designer Ana Maria Munoz of Anamu Designs.

“The traffic and exposure has been incredible”, said Munoz. “I came here with no other goal than to be seen. This has exceeded my highest expectations.”

Overall, we LOVED this event and found it necessary to attend both days. On one day, we talked to merchants and on the next, we shopped — taking home goodies from the designers featured in the photos and videos below. You know us, we had to get the video.

Note: Unique will be expanding to New York and Atlanta this year, so keep a look out!

Hello! I'm the founder of UNIQUE LA and want to say a big THANK YOU for coming! :) While the show is for the public, I'm so glad that the industry has embraced it, helping to make it a truly amazing place for designers to connect with all types of people (consumers, fans, buyers, media, etc.). Thanks for helping to spread the word, and for supporting local Made in the US design!

p.s. I am starting UNIQUE ATL and UNIQUE NYC later this year!

Unique LA was fantastic and I'm personally so thankful for Sonja and her team. They create a complete experience with designers, live DJ sets, great food, and creative (and free) workshops. WAY more than just shopping.

Thank you Macala and Fashionably Marketing for featuring the event and for the amazing ANAMU mention :) LOVE YA!

  • You're welcome lovely. It's wonderful knowing you.

  • We can't wait for your expansion Sonja! I am rarely impressed by anything in LA, you renewed my hope. Please teach a seminar on how to plan a proper shopping event.
