I’ve been a Apple product loving girl for the past four years. I never even looked at another brand for computers, phones and accessories until last month. Like any fashionably Apple girl, I’m always upgrading, getting it first and spending a lot of moolah in the process.
This time, I was going in for an extension cable for our keyboards so that I didn’t have to spend the $69.00 on upgrading to wireless keypads. After about 30 minutes and huge debate amongst associates (of whom used to be so knowledgeable and now they only seemed to care about swiping my credit card) on where this mysterious connector cable that Apple had carried for years was, I was informed, “We no longer carry that. You have to go to Fry’s Electronics, but we’ll sell you this wireless keyboard if you want it.”
No, I wanted the cable, so I went to Fry’s. The search for the cable was on again. After 45 minutes, only one sales associate (out of four available, of which some semi tried to help me, and others had no interest/knowledge at all to help me) managed to gerry rig a solution to extend the keyboard. The cost of the fugly grey/black cord combination was $39.00.
Working in fashion, I of course would normally make all attempts to avoid the fugly factor by just buying the $69.00 keyboard upgrade, but I was furious at both Fry’s and Apple. So furious that I refused to buy the keyboard, went home and decided how to best fix my issue without spending any more money on Apple products. In my fashionable rage/determination, I also pulled our four years of receipts and added up what I’ve spent at the Apple store.
Dear Apple:
I know you make your money on the newer, more feature rich, bigger/faster models of the same product in order to continue to meet your price points. In the four years I’ve been a customer, I’ve spent $26,837 on computers, phones and software. In case you don’t know, that’s an assistant’s salary! Instead of getting an assistant, I got Apple products.
And now, when I needed a simple $19.00 product, you discontinue it, forcing me to drive 12 miles to a place that didn’t even have it! Do you know how long it takes to drive 12 miles ONE-WAY in Los Angeles? I can’t take it anymore.
You and your products are detrimental to the growth of my small business. Our love affair ends here, and I’m going back to alternatives. Hopefully, Dell and Sony will take us back after we’ve so brutally rejected them. And hopefully BING and Windows 7 won’t suck too much; we like their commercials, so we have hope.
Sincerely,
A Mad Fashion Marketer
This is hilarious ( in a not-funny kind of way.) It's good to see someone speak their mind. If I were Apple, I'd be sending you anything you wanted…wireless keyboard included.
Thank you Lindsay – It just frustrating. I mean, a $10-20 item? It's ridiculous. The latest and greatest model is wearing thin.
Boo. Apple left a sour taste in my mouth during college (a couple yrs ago, haha) when I had trouble finding hardware & software quickly locally. Recently, I almost opted for an Apple laptop, but feared the same thing would happen. After reading this, I'm glad I stuck w/ Dell. And now that I'm reading that the Google Android may outdo the iPhone, I may opt for that as well. Apple looks chic, but still isn't practical after all these years.
Such a looser. $26K on Apple products in 4 years. You deserved it.
I can't laugh enough on this story. This is a perfect example how consumers are totally brain-washed by a brand.
Ol – Everyone is entitled to their opinions. I think a better opinion or statement would have been not call someone a loser, it generally show lack of education and knowledge on their part to cut someone down. Apple is an industry standard for what we do. Luckily some things can be done on PC. I am not a fool for using Apple, nor have I been brainwashed. I've given myself a competitive edge. The point of the post is that Apple's practices done align with their brand, not that someone is foolish.
