Social Shopping Evolution: Startup Strings.com Takes On E-Commerce Market
It looks like the evolution of social, mobile commerce has begun. Social startup, Strings, is taking on the e-commerce market by combining social networks and your online shopping habits. Strings is a social tracking and filtering program that aims to curate it’s users social interactions and experiences and convert them to online sales for retailers.
Strings seeks to benefit from social networking trends popularized by Facebook and Twitter. Strings users share and view online purchases with each other. The site, which launched Friday, tracks users’ activities on Netflix, YouTube and Amazon.com, and displays their rentals, viewing habits and purchases to a list of followers. The company takes a cut of sales when users buy products from participating sites.
According to BusinessWeek, “Strings is one example of how startups are trying to create a more personalized and entertaining way of shopping online, a bid to grab a cut of the $155 billion e-commerce market. Sites such as Groupon.com, RueLaLa.com and Swoopo.com let consumers find luxury brands at discount prices or compete in fast-paced auctions for products.”
“The goal of Strings is to predict what consumers will want to buy”, said founder Edward Balassanian.”The challenge with e-commerce is that users have a paradigm in their head; retraining consumers is not an easy task. Identifying who you are and what you follow gives us very good insight into what you want to buy.”
Strings users submit their login information for sites such as Netflix, Amazon.com and newspaper Web sites, allowing the company to track what they do.
Users then decide which purchases, rentals or articles they share with their friends. They in turn can follow other people’s stream of purchases.
Retailers Zappos, J.Crew, Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, Saks 5th Ave, Nordstrom, Speedo and Sephora have also included their services.

wow… looking forward to see where this goes. Sounds like a great case study if it works.
I know. Definitely watching this one.
The interesting thing here for me, beyond a very well made video, is the social network on auto-pilot.
Wow. As a shopper, it would be really neat to see what my friends are buying as opposed to talking about. And very helpful from the business angle as well. Good for all I think!

This is very cool. I'll definitely wait what will happen next.

For anyone who likes shopping, it’s a boon, being able to discover the ideal item, often at a very reasonable price. For the most part, as long as you take precautions, online shopping is very safe, especially when you deal with established retailers.
