Sustainability and Creative Support Main Themes of “Rock Fashion Week”

Submitted by Macala Wright on 11/18/2009 – 5:22 amComments

To kick off Rock Fashion Week in Los Angeles, Gen Art partnered with Plastics Make it Possible for the Fresh Faces in Fashion LA show

What made this show unique was its focus on sustainability and the mentorship of fashion designers who were involved.

Plastics Make it Possible, a program sponsored by America’s plastic makers through the American Chemistry Council, in partnership with Gen Art, the City of Los Angeles, the Renaissance Hotel and Sephora, covered the all production costs associated with the show for the five emerging womenswear and menswear designers and four accessories designers who participated.

Runway shows are expensive and designers can spend their entire budgets for one year on just one show. What better way to foster creativity and help emerging designers position themselves in the a crowded marketplace then by removing an enormous barrier?

The show also focused on sustainability, showcasing how plastics and recycled plastics are helping to shape the future of fashion and design. The accessories showcase had men’s and women’s accessories cleverly laid out in artistic installations that highlighted the creative use of plastic in fashion and the futuristic ways in which up-and-coming designers can apply these materials to today’s trends.

Did you know that skinny jeans wouldn’t have their stretch without plastic fabrics?

The show created a unique experience not only for show attendees, but for its participants. I’m looking forward to discovering what next year holds.
