Call Me A Communicator or Connecter, But Don’t Call Me Expert!
This morning, Geoff Livingston, shared why being called a social media expert or PR guy really irks him. Honestly, I can’t agree more. I, like Geoff, despise the terms, social media expert, publicist and even PR 2.0 guru. To me, they’re lacking titles and have been diluted by sub par practitioners (as Geoff points out in his article). When people ask me what I am, I joking say that “I’m a fashionable muse”.
The not so humorous answer for the questions is that I am Change Agent for fashion brands. I am a connector, mentor and strategist. I love what I do; I live it, I breathe it and I lose sleep over it. I take time to develop long term strategies that actually yield positive results and help my clients succeed, and I do so knowing that one size doesn’t fit all. So if being a “communicator” is synonymous with change agent, catalyst and connector, those are terms I happily identify myself with.
Words to live by:
To declare oneself an expert in anything seems ostentatious. Let others do the declaring. Even if I am an “expert” as others call me, in this super dynamic online world, if I rest on my laurels, it’s likely that any expertise garnered will become dated within six to 12 months. – Geoff Livingston
