Is This The Death Of Runway?

Submitted by on 07/04/2009 – 9:46 AM5 Comments

In February,  Marc Jacobs created new standards for ethical marketing when he cut his runway show in order to save jobs.  Now it seems others are following suit; abandoning traditional long format shows and embracing alternative, more cost effective methods of presenting collections. In a recent Wall St. Journal article on Los Angeles designers working together to revive L.A. Fashion Week, Christina Binkley wrote:

“The Internet has exacerbated pressures on the catwalks by making it easier for designers to market directly to consumers. Last fall, Viktor & Rolf released a video on its Web site rather than showing on a runway, and an increasing number of designers hold alternative presentations that they replay on their Web sites.”

Runway show audiences live streaming (video), digitally photographing and tweeting from their seats. Twitter and web 2.0 technologies have changed the course the fashion industry’s future again. Is this the death runway or the birth of a new way fashion designers and fashion houses to market their collections?

Hello Fashion Marketing…I love reading your blog and I was wondering how you could help me. I’m a very fashion conscious person…thanks to your blog and similar others…But in my town I don’t have access to better private label designers. I was hoping you could give me a top ten list or more of your favorite online boutiques that have price points between $250.00 and $1,000.00 per item. I LOVE fashion accessories too. Please feel free helping me get very fashion creative.

All other commenters, please feel free to contribute your favorite top 10 list as well.

    Sincerely,

    A Fashion Conscious Personality

  • High-End Fashion is in the tank. If you're rich maybe inconspicuous consumption is more becoming. The bottom has fallen out for the grand productions. No celebrity wants to be seen in the general public's eyes as being rich -even if they are. Maybe charities will make a come back but even that sector is suffering now. The uber rich want to protect their image; the merely rich are spooked & reckless spending is unseemly. I think we're all in a ” Deer in the Headlights” mode.

  • Lisabeth! Thank you for such an insightful comment. I think what you're describing is what I call “undercover luxe”. The affluent feel the need to protect their image, so they shop in the anonymity of their homes (online) and not publicly. The slightly less affluent, but still well to do, shopper has become a more conscious consumer because he or she realizes what they've been paying.

    Great site by the way.
