Wyclef Jean: Using Twitter To Market Music Online

Submitted by on 06/19/2009 – 11:35 PMNo Comment | 255 views

This past week, I had the pleasure of speaking on Twitter and fashion marketing at 140Conf. The conference discussed the use of Twitter across multiple industries; one of the most notable speakers was Wyclef Jean. Interviewed by Chris Sacca, Jean discussed how twitter has impacted the music industry.

Jean has replaced texting for Twitter; loving the instant conversation with fans and friends. Moreover, Jean loves having the ability to create micro communities, or “personal worlds,” in which his fans can live an experience, even if they aren’t right there beside him.

Living in Los Angeles, one of the biggest arguments against the use of social media & Twitter for entertainment companies is that “the message” is uncontrollable. The studios limit their interaction with fans or anything that they haven’t developed in-house because of legalities. Jean has done the complete opposite.

He’s taken the marketing of his music directly to his fans and let them become his online promotions team; he gives them the content and let’s them run with it.

Lifestyle brands, Fashion brands, Entertainment & Music industry professionals can learn something Wyclef Jean’s tactics and philosophy regarding online marketing.
